So I'm graduating this spring and plan on getting my motorcycle license around the same time. I want to move out of the house by June and could be heading fairly far away for a summer (at least to start) of actuarial training. My problem is I don't want to drive cross country if I'm just going to drive back at the end of the summer. Furthermore, I don't want to change my residency if it's only going to be a few months.

So my questions are:

1. Can I keep my NH license and buy a bike in another state, register, and insure it?

2. Can I survive the summer with just a bike in southern California or elsewhere?

3. Would it make sense to resell a bike after a few months or have it shipped home if I like it?

4. Am I completely insane for not wanting to drive my 08 Golf across the country?

I don't know about bikes, but I, a resident of Washington, own and insure a car registered in Oregon.

You could get by with a bike down here but you have to be good with highway riding, and traffic is heavy in the summer. What part of SoCal will you be in?

Some states are weird and let you get away with anything. Others are strict and require you to be a resident and have a matching drivers license with the same address.

1: yes
2: uhh...dont see why not. get some cooling/evaporative gear
3: pends. if its a hard to find bike, then keep it.
4: ehh. not really. but at the end of the day, its not like its a crazy special car. it is just a golf at the end of the day

No idea yet, applied to one in Newport Beach and one in Aliso Viejo as well as a bunch of other cities around the country (and sadly a few close to home). Just thought that ideal weather and greatest distance from home worked best for this hypothetical.

As most of the programs provide housing close to the offices, I don't know how far I would really be riding other than for fun. I survived a summer at home riding only a 50cc scooter. They say that you can survive in the program without a car at all, but I really like the freedom to go anywhere on my own schedule.

A friend of mine went to NH to school, bought a used car went to the DMV with only the title, played dumb, registered the car, told to come back to switch her license and never got a NH drivers license.

in regards to 4. I just don't want to deal with typical VW problems somewhere between the mississippi and the rockies. That's kind of worst case scenario for me and then the anxiety of knowing that nothing went wrong in one direction means better odds of something going wrong on the way back if I got that far.

My brother moved out to southern oregon and it took 2 weeks because of a blown head gasket and then a leaky turbo in his roommates subaru.

have you ever had a problem with your car?

I dont get why everyone thinks VW are the most un reliable POS on earth. like ya, they arent toyota levels, but i've heard WAYYYYYY more issues with subarus then VWs

Sounds about right for the NH DMV/gov't in general. I just paid a speeding ticket and they make you insert all of the information yourself online (citation #, category, dept., degree of speed, officer badge #, date and time). The whole time I was wondering why I couldn't just look it up by the citation or license #.

At the end I was questioning if they would have noticed me not paying it at all.

No issues so far and I love my car and am feeling like I might be okay since it is the NA 2.5 and not a turbo. Mechanically I think it's just as solid as any other car, I just don't want anything electronic to go wrong because that tends to get expensive.

You shouldn't worry about VW problems. I have a 2000 VR6, and the only mechanical problems the car ever had were me induced. (F'd up shift where my feet slipped off the pedals and striped a bolt out of a motor mount, and sliding into a curb on a snowy slushy day.)
